7 Reasons I Switched Back To Headway Themes

Headway Themes

No introduction needed, let’s just get straight into the reasons I have come back to Headway.

7 Reasons I Switched Back To Headway Themes

1. WooThemes was horrible.

Yep – while I loved the look and layout of the Mainstream theme from WooThemes, it was all downhill from there. It was buggy from the get go causing me to have to constantly fiddle with it. I’m in this game to write content and help people – not spend my time trying to get my theme to work.

I admit – one of the reasons I left Headway in the first place was because I felt like I spent too much time “designing” my site. What I learned during my time away was that:

  •  Headway was new
  • I was new to premium themes
  • Laying out a premium theme takes a bit of work

 Good news:

  •  Headway is no longer new and has made the “setup” even easier than it was before
  • I have been through a few premium themes now
  • I now enjoy installing and designing blogs

 2. The Founders of Headway

Clay and Grant Griffiths are two of the hardest working coders (Clay), designers and marketers (Grant) in the business. They diligently strive to make Headway a better, more powerful and richer experience for their customers.

Their hard work and passion for their product makes you want to be around them.

Simply put – I missed these guys.

 3. The Headway Support Community

As I mentioned above, as a blogger, my deal is all about creating conversations with you through content creation and community building. I don’t have time for jacking around with a theme – no matter who puts it out.

When I was considering coming back to Headway, the support community around Headway was readily available for my questions and concerns. Grant sent me instructions on how to play with me design behind the scenes so your ability to access this blog was not interrupted. He connected me directly with support concerning my questions about upgrading from the old version I had installed to the newest.

Besides the amazing support you get directly from Headway, there are stand alone sites out there that have videos and tutorials about Headway (this is why I call it the Headway support “community”).

 Here are a couple:

My friend John Haydon has a site full of Headway training videos – http://Headwayvideos.com

Joel Williams (BlogTechGuy) has one as well – http://themevids.com/category/headway/

 4. Video Tutorials

I learn by watching. I can read it and still not get it as well as I do if I can watch a video.

A quick count of the video tutorials in the support section of the Headway Themes website adds up to over 25 (this is just the links to videos, many of the links lead to multiple videos).

No other theme I ever tried came close to this amount of available of training.

Note: Yes, Headway has written documentation (not all of us learn by seeing) and a live support forum.

 5. SEO

Headway out of the box is worlds better than most themes when it comes to being search engine optimized.

Again, I’m a blogger – I’ll let my theme do the heavy SEO lifting.

 6. Drag and Drop

I’m no coder. I do not know but a bit (a very small bit) of CSS.

But I can drag and drop stuff around to the places I want it to be – and this is how I “design” this site with Headway.

 7. Bang For Your Buck

  1.  Cool, hard working and engaged Founders
  2. Seasoned theme development
  3. TONS of support
  4. Great SEO
  5. Easy to use
  6. Ongoing development

All for a great price.

That, my friends, is bang for your buck. All in all – these are the reasons I came back to Headway for MY sake.

In the end though – these are also the reason I came back for YOUR sake. As the Creating Conversations with frank community, I want the best user experience for you when you visit.

I wanted you to have a stable environment that was not going down are acting funky at the drop of the hat.

I also wanted you to have a blog owner that was happy and not stressed out because his theme was acting crazy.

I’m glad to be back – I hope the experience is a great one for you!

P.S. Stay tuned tomorrow for a post on why I switched to the LiveFyre commenting system.

I actually have a question about headway and maybe GrantGriffiths can help me out.

What was missing for me to decide to move over to something like headway was a safe place that a person like me-(with minimal computer talents when it comes to things like uploading with ftp and stuff like that) could work with the layout and get it right in a non live way-without taking my site off line before I transferred over the content.

I guess what I am saying would be great was a setup where I could customize the look of my "headway" and then upload that to my site.

Did that question make sense???

FrankDickinson 337 pts moderator

newdaynewlessonGrantGriffiths Perfect sense Susie. I'll let Grant jump in here more fully, but here's an option:

http://headwaythemes.com/documentation/developer-r...

Take a look at the plugin - it was easy to setup and work with and it was what I used as I made the switch back to headway from woothemes.

Hey Frank,

Good post about Headway. My alter ego is a designer/ developer and I was looking at using that platform to create affordable sites that are easy to create and set up. I can code a full theme if need be, but if I can save some time with tools that do it for me, well, there you go...

Anyway, I was wondering if you know if Headway supports SlideDeck?

GrantGriffiths 75 pts

Hollandz I have seen a few sites on Headway using SlideDeck. Don't have the URL's off the top of my head. Sorry

If you have any other questions, let us know. Always glad to discuss and answer questions.

I've been on headway for a long while now and it absolutely falls into my love of anything that involves code free geekery. The fact that a monkey like myself who was too lazy to learn code (a regret) is able to get most of what he wants on the site really makes the product nothing short of delightful. Plus, and you couldn't have put it better, Grant and Clay have been both phenomenally helpful and utterly patient.

FrankDickinson 337 pts moderator

MSchechter I'm with you on the regret of not learning code - but, like you say, Headway allows you to get the most without that knowledge.

We keep this up and GrantGriffiths is going to be intolerable to live with!

Hi Frank,

First time visitor, but had to say I enjoy the post and feedback on the Headway theme.

Very neat and clean theme you are using. I don't hear as much about this theme as I do about Thesis, so it was good to have your expert opinion and facts.

Looking forward to more.

Bryce

Bryce Christiansen First of all Bryce, welcome to the Creating Conversations community - we are glad you are here!

I'm also glad you found the post helpful. The thing I like most about Headway is the ability to design a clean, professional looking site with ease. As I said in the post, I'm no coder or designer - Headway allows me to get this kind of site without knowing code or design.

In my estimation - Headway is like Thesis - but it is Thesis on steroids! Just as powerful (more powerful in some ways) but a whole lot easier to use.

And then there is GrantGriffiths - as he said below - he is readily available to answer questions and assist you along the way. Top notch guy all around.

Great to have you here - thanks!

Looks great Frank! I like Woothemes and use one of their themes on a niche website I have but the one you were using just didn't look right. Another blogger, Paul, used it and it messed up the titles like I had pointed out. So weird.

But what you've done here looks great! Very professional looking!

FrankDickinson 337 pts moderator

Benny_Hsu Hey bud - thanks for the kind words - I forgot how much I love playing with Headway.

After the conversation here - I'm guessing that it all depends on the theme you use from WooThemes. I actually have a different one on a niche site and it is okay - nothing special.

One thing that I don't like (at least on the two that I have/had) is the SEO - just not fledged out very well.

Headway is top of the heap with SEO.

Thanks for mentioning my video site Frank, I appreciate it. I'm looking forward to your opinion on Livefyre, I can't remember if you used Disqus before, but I do and there are a couple of things I really don't like about it. I do use Woo Themes a lot as well as Headway, as they have a very specific purpose and when someone wants a site that looks exactly like that, design and all, then it's a no brainer. If you need a site that will evolve over time, is a LOT more flexible, have your own design and on that gives you more control and power then I use Headway.

GrantGriffiths 75 pts

BlogTechGuy Joel aka blogtechguy , as always we appreciate all of the support you give us here at Headway Themes.

Headway 3.0 will come with not only a very user friendly API for building child themes. We will have a marketplace full of some great child themes.

Our own child themes and CT's from three great theme companies. @OrganicThemes, @Press75 aka jschuller and allurethemes are already on board and ready to port over some of their existing themes to Headway as child themes. They are also gearing up to build some exclusive child themes for the Headway marketplace.

In addition to child themes, picture child themes that will work in the new Headway 3.0 visual editor and grid system. Headway 3.0 will take child themes to an entire new level for both the causal user to the hard core developer. Developers are going to love this as it will enable them to give their clients what they want and at the same time be able to crank out their work faster. A win-win for everyone.

BlogTechGuy Hey Joel - my pleasure - a very helpful site you have there!

yes, I had DISQUS on herein the beginning, then went to Intense Debate - back to DISQUS for a short time and then to LiveFyre - which I am loving so far. Danny uses it over at For Bloggers By Bloggers so I have become accustomed to it since I write there every Friday.

I think you would enjoy the switch - especially if DISQUS is giving you problems.

FrankDickinsonBlogTechGuy Hey Joel, I'm happy to answer any questions you have about Livefyre! I'm also ready to go vist your site as my blog is on Headway and I've been working lately on customizing it.

Question for GrantGriffiths : how would a non-designer WP user take advantage of child themes? I hear the term thrown around alot but I'm not quite sure I get the value of it or how I would use it.

Side note: I love watching comments appear right on the page while I'm reading :)

My latest conversation: Recap from BlogHer11: Can't stop blogging now!

GrantGriffiths 75 pts

jennalangerFrankDickinsonBlogTechGuy Child themes are going to give you a great starting point for one thing as a non-designer.

Headway 3.0 will take child themes to the next level by giving you the power of the visual editor and the new grid system. This will give the non-designer the ability to add features, Blocks as we call them and change the general layout. What you most likely will not be able to do, depending on the Child Theme design, is change the site design and style. This will need to be maintained so as to not ruin the look the designer was wanting to provide with the Child Theme.

jennalangerFrankDickinson Thanks Frank and hi Jenna! Perhaps somewhere else is a better place for a discussion as I don't want to hijack Frank's post, but as long as I can transfer comment threading from Disqus to LiveFyre then I might give it a go!

My latest conversation: Recap from BlogHer11: Can't stop blogging now!

BlogTechGuy 15 pts

jennalanger Disqus syncs with WordPress however if I deactivate Disqus the threading is lost as they use a different threading ID to the one WordPress uses - hence why I still use Disqus. As you can imagine that makes comments look pretty confusing, so I'm wondering if LiveFyre will be able to take that threading from WordPress if it is via Disqus?

BlogTechGuy Hi Joel,

Hopefully FrankDickinson doesn't mind me jumping in here, but I wrote an overview of why I switched Livefyre back on after being on native WordPress comments for a while (I had used Livefyre until my blog redesign, and was waiting for some new features to be implemented).

You can read about some of the core features here, and why I feel it's the best comment platform for both community and encouraging comments:

Hi Frank,

I chose Headway from the beginning because I needed a theme that was 100% newbie-friendly. I was able to create my website without any technical or design skills whatsoever. The Headway interface is so easy to learn and the community support is top-notch. It's a perfect match for me. Can't wait to see the features in the new version!

FrankDickinson 337 pts moderator

marianne.worley I was just talking with GrantGriffiths this morning about 3.0 - prepare to be blown away!

GrantGriffiths 75 pts

marianne.worley Thanks for your kind words. When Clay started to develop Headway, I told him it had to be more than dummy proof. It had to be dad proof. If I can use it anyone should be able to.

I think you will find Headway 3.0 to be even more user friendly and enable the non-coder and beginner to do even more. Plus, the API is being completely redone by Clay and his Team. Developers are going to love how easy it will be to build child themes and the new Block system. Blocks are replacing Leafs BTW.

My latest conversation: Headway 3.0 - a small sneak peek

JohnHaydon 25 pts

Frank - thanks for including me. Ironically, I've used WooThemes on a few projects (Grant's going to kill me), and have had great experiences. That said, Headway is much more flexible for developing websites from the ground up (custom designs via .PSD...).
